The group of five mappers draws the maps for JWOC in Tampere 

During the last winter the organizers of the Junior World Orienteering Championships asked bids from the best map makers in Finland to make a maps for JWOC 2028. Organizers received a good number of good offers and chose two groups to produce forest and sprint maps.

Sprint maps will be made by Eemil Koskinen and Seeti Salonen. Both mappers are originally also from Pirkanmaa region, and they know Tampere and it’s surrounds well in advance. Eemil made a map for 2025 Finnish Championships in Sprint which was held in Tampere and organized by Tampereen Pyrintö and Seeti was the map secretary in the same event.

“I’m looking forward to continuing my work with Tampereen Pyrintö and being a part of a competent team building such a prestigious event as JWOC. The diverse sprint terrains in Tampere challenge the mapmakers at least as much as the athletes, which keeps the mapping work interesting throughout these two years (mapping has already started). Train hard and see you in Tampere!” Eemil Koskinen desribes his work in JWOC 2028 project.

Forest mapping will be carried out by the trio which combines the absolute top level and the future of the orienteering mapping 

The group of Janne Weckman, Timo Joensuu and Tommi Hakuli was selected to work with the forest mapping. Janne Weckman and Timo Joensuu are really experienced map makers and they have worked for many major orienteering events such as several Jukolan Viesti relays and WOC 2025 in Kuopio. Tommi Hakuli represent the younger generation but has already gain a lot of experience in different kind of terrains and maps all around the Europe. 

“It is a great honor to be selected as a map maker for JWOC and I’m looking forward of working in the fantastic terrains of Tampere with my first map for the Championships with Janne and Timo. I have always enjoyed running on maps made by the duo as our mapping styles fits well together, so we can offer high quality maps for the world’s best junior orienteers.” Tommi Hakuli about the cooperation between the mapping team.
